Call for Abstracts

Dear Postgraduate Philosophers,

the 3rd Munich Graduate Conference in Ethics will take place at the University of Munich (LMU) on July 28th/29th 2022. It will be the third of a series of annual graduate conferences focussed on topics in ethics, broadly conceived. It will offer postgraduate researches a friendly environment to present their work and gain feedback, to establish valuable contacts to other early career researchers, as well as address and discuss early career issues.

Kindly hosted by the Munich Center for Ethics and Philosophy in Practice (Zentrum für Ethik und Philosophie in der Praxis, ZEPP), we will invite ten graduate speakers to present their work on any topic in ethics, including metaethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of action as well as related areas. The keynote lectures will be given by Laura Valentini (LMU) and Rae Langton (University of Cambridge). In addition, we will run an academic career workshop with a special focus on prospects for members of underrepresented groups in academia. The conference language will be English. We are currently planning to hold the conference on-site in Munich, but due to the ongoing pandemic, we may have to decide to host the conference online via Zoom. We'll provide further information on this as soon as possible.

We invite submissions by current MA students, PhD students as well as researchers who have completed their PhD in 2020 or later. Speakers will be asked to give talks of 20min, which will be followed by a short commentary by PhD students from LMU and about 15min of discussion.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 500 words in an anonymised PDF document at submission.mgce@lrz.uni-muenchen.de. Please include the author’s name and institutional affiliation as well as the title and area of the talk in your email.

For further information visit our website.

Please direct any questions and inquiries to organisers.mgce@lrz.uni-muenchen.de.

The deadline for submissions is March 31st. We aim to get back to applicants by May 1st. Successful participants will be required to submit a full paper or script by July 14th to be passed on to commentators.

We explicitly aim for this conference to be maximally diverse, regarding both speakers and topics. We are also committed to creating a supportive and friendly environment for everyone. All participants are free to leave the conference at any time for any reason. If needed, we aim to be able to provide childcare for invited speakers. If you have any other requirements facilitating your attendance, do not hesitate to get in touch.

We very much encourage members of underrepresented groups in philosophy to apply. Feel free to indicate in your email if you identify as a member of these groups (and please note that this information is not mandatory).

We also provide childcare for successful applicants who have children and want/need to bring them to the conference. If you have any questions about this, please contact us at organisers.mgce@lrz.uni-muenchen.de.

Additional information regarding COVID-19:
If it is possible to attend the conference in person, the conference will comply with the German government’s COVID-19 safety measures for public events in effect at that time. Currently, access to the LMU university buildings where the MGCE will be held is only possible if you are either fully vaccinated or recovered. What the rules will be at the time of the conference cannot be predicted at this point.
