Call for Abstracts
Dear Postgraduate Philosophers,
the 4th Munich Graduate Conference in Ethics will take place at the University of Munich (LMU) on July 6th/7th 2023. It will be the fourth of a series of annual graduate conferences focused on topics in ethics, broadly conceived. It will offer postgraduate researches a friendly environment to present their work and gain feedback, to establish valuable contacts to other early career researchers, as well as address and discuss early career issues.
Kindly hosted by the Munich Center for Ethics and Philosophy in Practice (Zentrum für Ethik und Philosophie in der Praxis, ZEPP), we will invite ten graduate speakers to present their work on any topic in ethics and practical philosophy, including metaethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of action as well as related areas. The keynote lectures will be given by Rachel Fraser (University of Oxford) and Suzanne Killmister (Monash University, Melbourne). In addition, we will run an academic career workshop with a special focus on prospects for members of underrepresented groups in academia. The conference language will be English.
We invite submissions by current MA students, PhD students as well as researchers who have completed their PhD in 2022 or later. Speakers will be asked to give talks of 20min, which will be followed by a short commentary by PhD students from LMU and about 15min of discussion.
Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words in an anonymised PDF document prepared for blind review at submission.mgce@lrz.uni-muenchen.de. Please include the author’s name and institutional affiliation as well as the title and area of the talk in your email.
Please direct any questions and inquiries to organisers.mgce@lrz.uni-muenchen.de.
The deadline for submissions is March 24th (11.59pm CET). We aim to get back to applicants by April 21st at the latest. Successful participants will be required to submit a full paper or script of up to 8000 words including list of references and notes by June 22nd to be passed on to commentators.
We explicitly aim for this conference to be maximally diverse, regarding both speakers and topics. We are also committed to creating a supportive and friendly environment for everyone. All participants are free to leave the conference at any time for any reason. If you have any other requirements facilitating your attendance, do not hesitate to get in touch.
We very much encourage members of underrepresented groups in philosophy to apply. Feel free to indicate in your email if you identify as a member of these groups (and please note that this information is not mandatory). We also provide childcare for successful applicants who have children and want/need to bring them to the conference. If you have any questions about this, please contact us at organisers.mgce@lrz.uni-muenchen.de.
Subject to pending funding approval, we will be able to provide up to ten travel grants for invited graduate speakers of up to 250 Euro each. We hope to be able to provide more information about this as soon as possible.
The conference is generously supported by the Center for Ethics and Philosophy in Practice (Zentrum für Ethik und Philosophie in der Praxis – ZEPP), the LMU Graduate Center, the mentoring programme of LMU‘s faculty of philosophy, the Commission for study grants of LMU‘s faculty of philosophy (Studienzuschusskommission), and the German Society for Analytical Philosophy (Gesellschaft für Analytische Philosophie – GAP e.V.).
